{"schemaVersion":"1.0","id":"how-far-to-the-bank","dataset":"cash-access-borough","title":"How far to the bank","description":"Sixteen per cent of Bexley lives within a mile of a bank. Add the Post Office and it is ninety-nine.","methodology":"The share of each borough's residents living within one mile of somewhere they can get cash, from the FCA's access-to-cash monitoring, published twice a year. The first series counts only brick-and-mortar branches of the larger banks and building societies that provide personal current accounts; the second adds Post Office counters, which is the FCA's own next grouping. The FCA publishes fourteen groupings in all, and for London thirteen are flat — every borough between 98% and 100% — because ATMs and cashback are everywhere. Branches are not, which is why these two are the pair worth drawing. Distances are straight-line to the nearest point, so a mile here is not a mile walked. Population weights are the FCA's own; this ingest re-weights London from the borough rows and checks the result against the FCA's published regional figure before writing anything.","category":"money","categoryLabel":"Money","cadence":"annual","placeholder":false,"landingPage":"https://londongraph.com/g/how-far-to-the-bank","markdown":"https://londongraph.com/g/how-far-to-the-bank/index.html.md","source":{"name":"Financial Conduct Authority","url":"https://www.fca.org.uk/data","licence":"Open Government Licence v3.0","licenceUrl":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"updatedAt":"2026-08-02T14:44:41.044Z","release":{"label":null,"publishedAt":null,"resourceUrl":null,"methodologyUrl":null,"sha256":null},"observations":[{"series":"Adding the Post Office","buckets":["Barking and Dagenham","Barnet","Bexley","Brent","Bromley","Camden","City of London","Croydon","Ealing","Enfield","Greenwich","Hackney","Hammersmith and Fulham","Haringey","Harrow","Havering","Hillingdon","Hounslow","Islington","Kensington and Chelsea","Kingston upon Thames","Lambeth","Lewisham","Merton","Newham","Redbridge","Richmond upon Thames","Southwark","Sutton","Tower Hamlets","Waltham Forest","Wandsworth","Westminster"],"values":[99.74494562577077,99.14788462357804,99.96709998395121,100,98.55958792133481,99.98425850398546,99.9542878039861,99.38336897748886,100,98.57632773565601,99.96435616153926,100,100,99.97559666162331,99.55971752173672,98.7070586159005,99.05149928482204,99.38145543793028,100,99.97951370661067,99.44513291132175,100,100,99.88544078599271,100,99.82300479621014,99.95054027182663,100,99.2532750460986,99.90992917842759,99.75229291543295,100,99.99629400406918],"unit":"% of residents within 1 mile · H2 2025","metadata":[{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{}]},{"series":"Bank or building society branch","buckets":["Barking and Dagenham","Barnet","Bexley","Brent","Bromley","Camden","City of London","Croydon","Ealing","Enfield","Greenwich","Hackney","Hammersmith and Fulham","Haringey","Harrow","Havering","Hillingdon","Hounslow","Islington","Kensington and Chelsea","Kingston upon Thames","Lambeth","Lewisham","Merton","Newham","Redbridge","Richmond upon Thames","Southwark","Sutton","Tower Hamlets","Waltham Forest","Wandsworth","Westminster"],"values":[21.15082775888486,57.50149746746298,15.92240410848981,72.79545433783697,30.8920757801606,99.27589118333118,99.9542878039861,29.75193211911582,57.17041611527716,66.85438938111511,29.41551026058068,98.3806662442421,94.62942312399706,98.13032884437052,38.66401413976492,54.26824121605549,41.11075873585015,57.25051238744954,99.96896550334326,96.2254004430161,43.99135881032924,77.56964039329264,62.91597460659257,59.90573135864315,64.04776179900524,43.28268849498459,30.07807571375939,87.0778932631671,54.65824454640431,79.3490801630312,70.18379432368022,84.00867363185588,98.17368520529365],"unit":"% of residents within 1 mile · H2 2025","metadata":[{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{},{}]}],"areaStatistics":null,"visualizations":[{"id":"overview","label":"Overview","description":"Sixteen per cent of Bexley lives within a mile of a bank.
