## Methodology

Still-registered charities in the London postal district (postcode areas E, EC, N, NW, SE, SW, W, WC), by decade of registration, from the Charity Commission's daily register extract. Survivorship, not founding rate: a small 1960s bar means few charities from the 1960s remain, not that few were created. The register itself only begins with the Charities Act 1960. The contact address is where the post goes — often a treasurer's home or an accountant's office — so this measures where charities are administered, not where they work.
